INLINE HEAT SEAL VERIFICATION: FROZEN FOOD

How can Snipe help you?

At Spookfish we are dedicated to preventing manufacturing faults and protecting the integrity of our clients and their products by using our inline 100% heat seal verification system, called Snipe.

SNIPE is a high-speed and robust inspection system that is retrofitted onto a packaging lines to verify the integrity of bottle seals. Snipe employs precision vision technology and intuitive software. SNIPE is both minimalist and cost-effective.

By combining Spookfish’s expertise in both Machine Learning and Industrial Machine Vision, new product variants that have not been seen before by the system can be trained rapidly. This is a feature that is simply not achievable using traditional machine vision methods. As a result, over the past year, Snipe has been used for verification on a huge number of different products including pillow bags, commonly used in frozen food packaging for distribution to consumers.

Heat seals are hugely critical in the food and beverage industry for ensuring the integrity of a wide range of products because they ensure the produce doesn’t degrade or become contaminated.

Yet currently, seal integrity inspections are limited to random sampling with manual spot checks. Although helpful, these checks are very inefficient in terms of resources, cost and time. Furthermore, limited heat seal inspections can lead to product recalls and poor feedback from clients. This can ultimately tarnish the brand name and even attract regulators’ fines.

The pillow bags generally have one back seal (vertical) as well as a top and bottom seal (horizontal). It is vital that all seals are completely sealed given a single break in the seal can compromise the entire contents of the bag.

Snipe ensures problems that arise during the heat seal process are flagged immediately, rather than at the end of the shift or later in the manufacturing process. This reduces the cost to rectify the damage, potential recalls, and negative feedback due to sealing issues.

Spookfish are experts at retrofitting intelligent vision systems onto existing production lines, as this provides flexibility for the end customer. The images to the right show how the thermal system can be positioned inline with a view of passing and rejecting good and poor heat seals respectively.

Are you facing any heat seal issues on your production line that you haven’t found a suitable solution for yet? If so, please get in touch with us to see if we can help you.

How and why is machine learning changing automated quality control? If you would like to learn more, please join our second webinar in the series on visual quality inspection. In this webinar we will be exploring methodologies, advantages and tradeoffs in the use of machine learning towards tools such as automated calibration of what we term intelligent vision machines. Whether you are on a production line in the pharma, automotive, electronics, food and beverage, medical or military sector this webinar is worth attending.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 has left us even more detached and separated around the world… However, to reduce the distance between us all, Spookfish has decided to host webinars, in hope that despite the distance between us, we can still form a relationship with any clients or people interested in our company. Our aim is to keep you as informed as we can during these uncertain and daunting times. During the seminar, we informed the attendee's about SNIPE. SNIPE is a high-speed and robust inspection system that is retrofitted on the packaging line to verify the integrity of bottle seals. Accordingly, Snipe employs precision technology and easy-to-use software, hence, Snipe remains both minimalist and cost-effective. Furthermore, SNIPE ensures problems that arise during the heat seal process are flagged immediately, rather than at the end of the shift or later in the manufacturing process, thereby reducing the cost to rectify the damage, potential recalls and negative feedback due to sealing issues. Although this webinar was the first, it will not be the last! Keep an eye out for more information about webinars in the future!
